Everyone knows the Matterhorn. But have you ever circumnavigated it on two chunky wheels? There are countless ways to discover Zermatt: on foot, by bike, by mountain railway – or at a decent pace on a dirt scooter.

If you fancy seeing things from a different perspective, don’t miss the descent from Schwarzsee to Zermatt. The trail takes you right through the impressive mountain landscape at the foot of the Matterhorn, offering just the right mix of action, nature and riding fun.

First up high, then downhill

The starting point is at 2,583 metres at Schwarzsee. From Zermatt, the Matterhorn Express takes you comfortably uphill, and the ride itself is already an experience. Once you arrive at the top, there is first a panorama you’ll want to take your time enjoying: Schwarzsee, the surrounding peaks and, of course, the Matterhorn, which looks particularly imposing from this side. Almost close enough to touch.

The route leads from Schwarzsee via Stafelalp and Furi down to Zermatt. In total, it covers around 12.7 kilometres, with almost all of the elevation going in one direction: downhill. The descent is just under 1,000 metres. At times, the trail gets steeper and the scooter picks up quite a bit of speed. Then things become more relaxed again, allowing you to simply roll along, enjoy the scenery and take in the mountain landscape.

Beneath the Matterhorn’s north face

One of the highlights of the tour comes when the Matterhorn suddenly stops being just a panorama on the horizon. The route runs along the foot of the Matterhorn’s north face. Here, the mountain feels immense and, at the same time, surprisingly close. As you ride downhill on the dirt scooter, the perspective is constantly changing. One moment you are high up in the alpine landscape; a little later, you are travelling through lush green alpine meadows and eventually heading towards the forest and Zermatt.

Rent a dirt scooter at Dorsaz Sport

Anyone who wants to experience the tour for themselves can rent a dirt scooter, including a helmet, from Dorsaz Sport at the valley station of Matterhorn Glacier Paradise in Zermatt. From there, the mountain railway takes you up to Schwarzsee, and the adventure begins.

The complete route from Schwarzsee to Zermatt is classified as moderately difficult. For families, the shorter route from Furi to Zermatt is particularly recommended. The tour is generally suitable for children aged 12 and over. Depending on the weather, functional outdoor clothing and, most importantly, rain protection are recommended. Sturdy, suitable footwear is also essential. And of course: put your helmet on and stick to the marked trails.
